postcard from Maine

August was my funemployment month. For the 2 weeks I had off from work, I decided to take a trip north and visit the only National Park in the Northeast. If you can’t tell already I was really taking advantage of my annual National Park pass - Acadia was my 4th National Park in 2018!

Our first stop was to Portland, to the Portland Head Lighthouse - the oldest lighthouse in Maine. At 5PM, Fort Williams Park glazed with a tint of gold. The sun is still a couple hours from saying goodbye for the day, and the warm summer breeze made the August day beautiful. We walked along the trail, and drove to the beach area where people were going for a dip.

After dropping off our bags at the airbnb, we headed to downtown Portland, just before sunset. Pro tip - put your name down at Eventide Oyster Co. and then taking a walk along the pier.

Breakfast x2 at Standard Baking Co. and Holy Donut. Well we couldn’t eat these all at once so we saved the donuts as our post hike snack.

Mackworth Island is where we headed for our short little hike. It’s a tiny island with a 1.25 mile loop around the island. Its got fairy houses along the way, and a swing overlooking the ocean!

On our way to Acadia we stopped by Freeport - for some beer and lobster.

Our last full day of activities is saved for Acadia National Park! We started with Sand Beach, then took the Ocean Path towards Thunder Hole, a natural small cave where water crashes in making sounds of thunder.

We drove over to towards Jordon Pond, another scenic stop in the park. Which shot do you like better?

We made it up to Cadillac Mountain, the highest point in the park as the sun peeked out from the clouds. We walked around the area, and even picked out wild blueberries!

Our last park stop was Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, located on a different island of Acadia National Park.

Winding down from our park exploration for the day, we headed to downtown Bar Harbor for a stroll around town. Local shops, outdoor summer movies, general people watching or observing a class of students going on their kayaking tour, take your pick. Did I mention they have more lobster and great views?
